Ten percent of the world’s power is generated through nuclear reactors. Recent public and private investments—primarily in small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs)—is making nuclear power a more cost-effective and sustainable energy consideration in the United States and Canada. These new reactors can be built off-site then transported to the site location for quick assembly, making SMRs a viable energy option for rural, remote communities. Because of their size and modularity, SMRs have lower up-front costs and can be used in power generation and other large-scale power requirements. From water-cooled to salt-cooled reactors and from coolant storage tanks to waste storage, stainless steel is the go-to material for a range of applications within the nuclear power segment.
